Richmond’s Public House will reopen on 10 December after undergoing a $3 million refurbishment.

The 620-square-metre venue will welcome back diners with a new look and new menu.

A number of versatile spaces, housed across four floors, will see the venue hosting up to 450 people once COVID restrictions lift (in the meantime, capacity is capped at 320).

Architect Greig Carter lead the project, which features a French Riviera-inspired aesthetic. To allow for increased capacity, dance floors have been opened up, outdoor seating has been extended and two-tiered rooftop deck with city views has been introduced.

The timber-clad ground floor public bar will offer local beers, wines, spirits and cocktails, in a space that displays rediscovered bluestone and brickwork.

The first floor Public Lounge is set to host private functions or evening drinks. The space features curved velvet booths, brass features and art deco style lighting, opening up to a semi-enclosed, heated Terrace Bar.

The two-floored Rooftop Deck and Garden allows for uninterrupted 360-degree views of Richmond Parklands, the Eastern suburbs, the MCG and the city skyline. Specially designed tiered banquettes are accompanied by dotted umbrellas featuring a Riviera palette of yellow, blue and white. The menu will feature plates inspired by a range of global street foods, paired with unique and classic cocktails, select spirits, craft beer and wine.

“What initially began as a four month upgrade at Public House, has ended up an 18 month complete site renovation,” said Publican Jon De Fraga. “After revealing some old bluestone and original brickwork, we decided to strip it right back to the bones. We’re pleased to be finally opening the doors this week, after many lengthy and challenging delays due to COVID. We’re looking forward to showcasing to Melburnians and our loyal Richmond community, the unique and unrivalled view from Public House’s new rooftop, inspired by our travels.”

Public House will be open Tuesday through to Sunday, 12pm until late, for walk-ins, casual dining, special events and private functions.
