Four Pillars has been announced as Australia’s first carbon neutral gin distillery following a $7 million dollar upgrade to its Healesville headquarters in Victoria’s Yarra Valley.
The certification is given under Australian government initiative, Climate Active, for businesses who have reached zero net emissions.
Four Pillars have been working with Climate Active and consultants Ndver Environmental to achieve the title.
“From the very first day we distilled gin we have tried to recycle, re-use and replenish our environment and give back to the community,” says Four Pillars co-founder and distiller Cameron Mackenzie.
“We cannot give more to the community than assure it that our gins tread carefully on our planet especially in this time of climate crisis.”
The soon-to-open distillery, dubbed Healesville 2.0, has undergone 1000sqm expansion of the original site.
Gin will be piped directly to the bar through copper pipes and tonic kegs will be used to reduce glass waste
External and internal landscaping will allow for the planting of local natives and botanicals, which will feature in future distillations.
Sustainability was also at the forefront of the renovations with the construction using recycled and upcycled concrete and bricks, pineapple ‘leather’ upholstery and repurposed building waste.
The distillery is set to open at the end of April 2022.
