Grill’d has announced it will remove single-use black plastic straws from its 130 burger restaurants across Australia, labelling them an “unnecessary drink accessory”.
Founder and managing director Simon Crowe says 1.7 million straws were being used in Grill’d restaurants every year.
“Caring about sustainability and the environment has always been part of the Grill’d DNA, but we’re dedicated to doing more and getting better,” he says.
“Banning straws is just one of the sustainability initiatives that we’re committed to, and we hope more restaurants will do the same.”
The move has been commended by ABC TV’s War on Waste program, which saw host Craig Reucassel interview Crowe in an episode this week.
Grill’d is among many hospitality venues that have joined the movement in recent months.
Intermedia, publisher of Hospitality magazine, is also lending its support to the campaign to reduce the use of single-use plastic straws in Australia.
