The Good Food Awards were held last night at Brisbane’s Howard Smith Wharves, with the Australian culinary industry coming together to find out who hit it big.
The announcement of Brae as Restaurant of the Year came as no surprise to many, with Dan Hunter’s regional Victorian restaurant also maintaining three hats.
Brisbane’s Joy, run by former Sepia/Automata/Sixpenny chefs Sarah and Tim Scott, took out the Best New Restaurant award, with Firedoor’s Lennox Hastie named Chef of the Year.
Pipi in Pottsville, New South Wales, received the award for Regional Restaurant of the Year with Michael and Zara Madrusan’s Bar Margaux in Melbourne taking out the prize for Bar of the Year.
On the topic of drinks, Brent Savage and Nick Hildebrandt’s Yellow took out Wine List of the Year with fermentAsian in South Australia taking out the regional equivalent. Forbes Appleby from Franklin in Hobart was named Sommelier of the Year.
Joanna Smith from Aaron Turner’s Igni in Geelong received the award for Service Excellence with Momofuku Seiobo’s Anna Ugarte-Carral taking out the Josephine Pignolet Young Chef award. Maggie Beer received the 2020 Legend award and the National Indigenous Culinary Institute secured the Food for Good award.
On the hat front, only five restaurants received three hats; Quay and Six Penny in New South Wales, Orana in South Australia and Brae, Attica and Minamishima in Victoria.
