Norwegian Bartender Adrián Michalčík was named Diageo World Class Global Bartender of the Year in a competition held on 15 September.

The event took place at Sydney’s Four Seasons Hotel and saw bartenders from 50 countries take part.

Michalčík competed alongside other finalists in a series of challenges that were created to test their knowledge, creativity and skill.

“The last few years have been incredibly tough for me and for our industry,” says Michalčík.

“Just to get the chance to compete here, in real life, against some truly amazing bartenders, feels like the start of a new chapter. There were moments I wasn’t sure I’d make the next round let alone win the title.”

The judging panel was consisted of industry professionals including Ago Perrone, Monica Berg and Ryan Chetiyawardana.

Finalists were tasked to design a cordial using surplus fruit, make a highball with Johnnie Walker scotch and construct the perfect with Tanqueray No. Ten.

“This year’s competition has truly blown me away,” says Global Head of Diageo World Class Marissa Johnston.

“Our finalists have taken their craft to the next level and Adrián stood out as a giant among giants. He is a very worthy winner and I’m really looking forward to working with him in the year ahead.”

The competition was held as part of the 2022 World Class Cocktail festival which saw a series of events and activations take place at venues across Circular Quay.

It was announced that the next city to host the competition next year will be São Paulo in Brazil.
