New research has revealed off-premises dining is on the rise in Australia, with hospitality venues restricted to takeaway only.
The NPD Group’s research showed dining in at restaurants and cafes naturally dropped in February, but found a 10 per cent increase in delivery, pick up and drive-thru.
“The industry is changing very quickly and moving to pick-up and delivery-only options,” says Gimantha Jayasinghe, Senior Vice President and Deputy Managing Director Asia Pacific at The NPD Group.
“Full-service restaurants and cafes are adapting to the current situation by introducing take away and delivery friendly menus. NPD has also seen strong demand for ‘in-store hygiene’ and ‘contactless’ delivery.”
The quick service restaurant channel, which represents the majority of restaurants transactions, has picked up, with pizza operations experiencing a surge in sales while burger sales have decreased.
The research shows younger consumers are mostly responsible for the surge in raw traffic share whereas traffic from those over the age of 50 has dropped by 15 per cent.
