Commune Group, the team behind Firebird and Tokyo Tina, are set to launch Moonhouse in Melbourne’s Balaclava.
The new concept aims to serve up Chinese cuisine in a bistro setting and will accommodate 110 guests with 74 seats downstairs and 36 in a private dining area.
“We want Moonhouse to be a neighbourhood restaurant that people travel to from all over Melbourne,” says Commune Group Creative Director, Simon Blacher.
“I grew up and cut my teeth in this area, and we feel privileged to be taking over such an important site in Balaclava. The building is rich in history, and our design direction respects and embraces its heritage.”
In the kitchen is Executive Chef Anthony Choi who is known for his work at Cumulus Inc. and Firebird; Commune Group Pastry Chef Enza Soto and Head Chef Shirley Sunnakwan.
The team aims to express contemporary flavours with dishes such as the Hainanese chicken club sandwich along with Soto’s innovative desserts.
An extensive wok section will cover dishes like supreme fried rice, soft shell crab with garlic, black bean and pepper as well as prawn toast and prawn bisque dipping sauce.
The drinks list will hone in on Australian-made wines, beers and spirits.
Moonhouse will be located on the corner of Carlisle and Nelson Street, Balaclava.
