Bacon Day is back for another year on 4 September.

Venues are encouraged to put Australian bacon on the menu and spread the word that local is best.

Australian Pork Limited (APL) says the average consumer is unaware that a large percentage of bacon is made with imported pork even though it’s produced in Australia.

“We really want Australian shoppers to be aware that the majority of ham and bacon in this country is made using imported pork,” says Margo Andrae, the organisation’s chief executive.

To celebrate Aussie farmers, APL has teamed up with chefs and venues to hero the best local rashers.

Sydney’s Nomad will create a bacon, leek, manchego and Manjimup truffle pie with Sixpenny serving up a cheese and bacon scroll.

Blackwood Pantry are keeping the carb theme going with a bacon, sour cherry and pepper berry relish, fried egg, camembert cheese, rocket and truffle mayo ciabatta, with Good Ways Deli in Redfern taking the traditional butty to a new level with streaky bacon, Pepe Saya butter and brown sauce.

Chefs on Wheels, Cuckoo Callay, Vic’s Meat Fish Markets, Colin Fassnidge, Bertoni’s Balmain, Bistro Rex, Split Milk bar and Calico Redfern will also be joining the bacon-fest, which will be held over the weekend of 4-5 September.

“We are so thrilled to hero our amazing farmers and smallgoods makers this National Bacon Day,” says Andrae .

“There’s never been a better year to buy local and treat yourself to something tasty!”
