Princi Smallgoods have been named as the producers behind the best bacon in Australia.

The Perth-based company’s full rasher bacon took out the prized position after competing with more than 140 entries.

“Our recipe has travelled from Italy to Australia,” says Pino Princi, director of Princi Smallgoods. “What really sets our bacon apart though, I believe, is the quality of the pork that we begin with.”

Gray’s Modern Meat Mart in Toowoomba came in second with Griffith Butchery in Canberra sitting in third place.

In the short cut category, first place honours were given to Southlands Quality Meats in Canberra with Westridge Meats from Toowomba taking out second place. Equal third was awarded to Loveday’s Quality Meats on the Gold Coast and Eurostyle Smallgoods in Perth.

Entries were judged in raw and cooked form by four foodservice professionals including Fleischmeister Horst Schurger, chefs Simon Bestley, Adam Moore and Paul McDonald.

With International Bacon Day around corner on 31 August, Australian Pork’s Mitch Edwards says it’s a timely reminder for venues to champion Aussie bacon.

“Many people are surprised to learn that 80 per cent of bacon sold in Australia is made using imported pork,” says Edwards.

“If you want to support Aussie pig farmers, buy bacon made from 100 per cent Australian pork [and] look for the pink Australian Pork logo or make sure the bar chart on the country of origin label has a percentage of over 90 per cent of Australian ingredients.”
