Vino & Sputino has opened in Woollahra, Sydney, taking up residence in the space left behind by famed French restaurant Claude’s.

The new venue, owned by restaurateurs Annie and Dimitri Illiev, instead brings a taste of the Amalfi Coast to the Eastern suburbs, offering diners traditional Italian food and wine.

A ground floor casual eatery designed for snacking and aperitif occasions, while a more formal setting can be found upstairs.

Executive chef Carlo Della Salla, who hails from the Amalfi Coast, is behind the menu, which features generations-old family recipes.

“The dishes on the menu are those from my childhood,” he says. “Shared from my Grandmother, to my mother, and to me, I want to bring the love and appreciation for the Italian food culture to Australia through these recipes. Of course, I have made them my own by adding something here and there, but I think the true value of the dish comes from its simplicity. It doesn’t have to be served as fine dining to be good.”

Menu highlights include bruschetta, with fresh tomato concasse’ and basil on toasted Iggy’s sourdough; spaghetti aglio olio e peperonciono o spaghetti di mezzanotte, a garlic, cayenne pepper, parsley and anchovy sauce pasta dish topped with toasted breadcrumbs; and for dessert, the Zeppola Napoletana, an Italian doughnut crusted with cinnamon and lemon zest sugar, served with pistachio and hazelnut cream.

Food is designed to compliment, the wine and cocktail lists, both of which are expansive, with a 40 Italian imports on offer as well as 35 cocktails.

Vino & Spuntino will be open Wednesday to Sunday for lunch and dinner, between 12pm and 11pm at 10 Oxford st, Woollarah
