Surplus food marketplace Too Good To Go has expanded to Queensland, marking the fourth Australian state in its operation.
The marketplace debuted in Australia in August 2024, and has quickly gained over 1300 partners in NSW, WA, Vic, and now QLD. Its developers founded the business in 2015 in Copenhagen as a response to the environmental impact of food waste. In Australia, 7.6 million tonnes of food is discarded annually, of which 70 per cent is still edible.
The app facilitates a symbiotic relationship between business owners and customers: businesses can recover costs on end-of-day goods that would otherwise be thrown. Meanwhile, customers receive high quality goods at reduced prices.
“Expanding our footprint to include Queensland is an important step in our goal to help halve Australia’s food waste by 2030. Queenslanders are known for appreciating fresh food, and we are eager to empower Brisbane, and greater Queensland locals to take meaningful action and contribute to a more sustainable future,” said Country Director of Australia for Too Good To Go Joost Rietveld.
More than half a million Australians have joined Too Good To Go in a response Rietveld labels “incredible”. “There has never been a better time for food businesses to start saving food with Too Good To Go instead of seeing the food they have created with pride and joy ending up in the bin,” says Rietveld.
For Sushi Sushi CEO Stephen Anders, the initiative ensures all the sushi they prepare daily is consumed, and aligns with the business’s sustainability goals. “Adding our Queensland stores to the partnership aligns perfectly with our national sustainability goals, helping Sushi Sushi continue to set sustainability benchmarks for the category,” says Anders.
Beefy’s Pies General Manager Jason Lyons said Beefy’s would offer remaining stock of the brand’s pies and pastries in Too Good To Go mixed Surprise Bags. “It’s incredibly rewarding to be part of a global initiative that’s making strides in the fight against food waste,” added Lyons.
