Chefs, restaurateurs, and hospitality professionals gathered together last week to countdown the top 50 fine diners in the world at a live awards ceremony held in Italy’s Turin.
Japanese restaurant Maido took out the no.1 position after placing fifth last year. Maido is run by chef-owner Mitsuharu ‘Micha’ Tsumura and is located in Lima, Peru. The fine diner has been serving dishes described as a “masterclass in Nikkei cuisine” for over 15 years.
“Led by the brilliant Micha Tsumura, the team has demonstrated remarkable dedication, seamlessly incorporating Japanese techniques with traditional Peruvian ingredients to create dishes that captivate and surprise diners,” says William Drew, director of content.
Asador Etxebarri (Spain) ranked second, followed by Quintonil (Mexico City), Diverxo (Madrid), and Alchemist (Copenhagen), which completed the top five.
The list featured restaurants from 22 territories across five continents, with 10 new restaurants making their debut. Bangkok’s Potong received the Highest New Entry award, coming in at no.13, while Ikoyi was the Highest Climber, moving up 27 spots to no.15.
Massimo Bottura and partner Lara Gilmore jointly received the Icon award, while Maxime Frédéric was named The World’s Best Pastry Chef. Mohamed Benabdallah from Asador Etxebarri received The World’s Best Sommelier award and Celele in Cartagena secured the sustainability award.
Australia did not place in the top 50, however Saint Peter was named no.66 in the extended list.
