A new category of wine store has opened its doors in Collingwood, Melbourne.

Glou is brought to you by IDES alum Rahel Goldmann and Ron Davis (Samuel Pepy’s, Le Pont Wine Store) and revolves around wine on tap.

The venue is part-wine store, part-tasting room and is inspired by similar sustainable concepts seen in Europe.

Goldmann says the wine market in Australia: “finds itself in single use glass, under single use closures, and wrapped up in single use labels. As much as these things can go into our recycling bins, unfortunately in Australia that system is just not where it needs to be.”

The Glou team work directly with wine producers including Rasa Wines, Ari’s Natural Wine Co, Dirty Black Denim and more to take wine from barrels into kegs made in the Netherlands.

Customers are able to purchase wine in reusable bottles which come in 500ml, 1000ml and 2000ml sizes.

There are no labels involved and customers can receive a rebate if they bring bottles back into the store.

Glou also encompasses a tasting room where guests can meet winemakers, viticulturists and industry figures for tastings and educational sessions.

Best of all, the snack menu is provided by neighbouring yakitori bar Mono XO.

“Our tasting room is about community, and the more we communicate as a community, the stronger we become, says Goldmann.”

The venue is open Tuesday to Sunday from 12-9pm.
