Emmanuel Cadieu from Merivale’s two-hatted restaurant, est., has been named dux at the announcement of the Court of Master Sommeliers’ Advanced examination results.

The Court of Master Sommeliers was established in 1977 to promote excellence in hotel and restaurant beverage services. The program guides aspiring Masters through four increasingly rigorous levels of coursework and examination: Introductory Sommelier, Certified Sommelier, Advanced Level Sommelier and Master Sommelier.

Since 2008 in Australia 822 sommeliers have participated in the examinations, resulting in 508 Introductory Sommelier graduates, 221 Certified Sommelier graduates, 17 Advanced Level Master Sommeliers and two who have attained the title of Master Sommelier: Franck Moreau, Merivale’s group sommelier, and Rockpool 1989’s Sebastian Crowther. Worldwide there are currently just 225 sommeliers who have gained the highly coveted title of Master Sommelier.

At the 2015 Advanced Examination results announcement, Cadieu was named dux, while Advanced Sommelier certificates were presented to Benjamin Hasko (Luxury Beverage Group, Sydney), Filippo L’Episcopo (Park Hyatt, Sydney), Bengt Baumgartner (The European/Melbourne Supper Club, Melbourne), Han Yew Kong (Marina Bay Sands, Singapore) and Richard Healy (Rockpool Bar and Grill, Sydney).

Timothy Perlstone from Sydney’s Public Dining Room in Balmoral was named dux of the Introductory and Certified levels.

“We have been thrilled by the calibre of students participating in this year’s program. It’s a strong result to see 25 percent of candidates achieving the Advanced Sommelier Certificate, particularly as this is the very first time that this level of Certification has been offered in Australia,” said Brian Julyan, chief executive of the Court of Master Sommeliers.

Franck Moreau added “With seven Master Sommeliers in attendance from Australia, New Zealand, The United Kingdom and USA, and students attending from both throughout Australia as well as New Zealand, Singapore, Hong Kong and Macau, Australia is now known as a leading training ground for sommeliers worldwide, and the increased number of candidates seeking CMS certification in Australia really demonstrates this.”
