Australian culinary talent Greg Malouf passed away last week at his home in Dubai at the age of 65.
Malouf was born to Lebanese parents in Melbourne and went on to become a Michelin-starred and hatted chef, best known for running some of Melbourne’s most popular restaurants including O’Connell’s in the 90s and later, Momo.
He was a regular on the silver screen, appearing on programs such as Food Safari, MasterChef Australia, and penned a total of eight books championing Middle Eastern cuisine with his most recent title – Suqar – landing him a James Beard Award.
There’s no doubt Malouf played an key role in introducing many Australians to the world of Middle Eastern flavours and techniques, with the chef dubbed the ‘master of Middle Eastern food’.
Malouf faced life-long health battles and had received two heart transplants, which did not stop him from continuing his work in the culinary world.
“He always expressed his deep gratitude for these gifts, which allowed him to pursue a rich and rewarding life,” reads a statement from the Malouf family.
“Not one for false modesty, Greg nonetheless had an ego-less approach to the pursuit of his craft, always honouring the cultural heritage of the food that inspired him.
“He went out of his way to acknowledge the inspiration he took from the women in his family – definitely for cooking but also for the enduring family values which guided him.”
Chefs have taken to social media to offer their condolences and pay tributes to Malouf, with many sharing personal stories.
“Greg was one of the most influential chefs Australia has ever seen. He put the misunderstood and too often underappreciated food of the Levant into the limelight,” said Chef Tom Sarafian.
The Malouf family has thanked the public for their support, and requested privacy during this difficult time. Greg is survived by his ex-wife and co-author Lucy Malouf.
