It’s no secret that staffing is a significant challenge for the Quick Service Restaurant (QSR) sector at the moment.
Skills shortages, high turnover, and retention gaps are among the biggest challenges currently facing the hospitality industry. According to Jobs and Skills Australia, chefs and cooks have been in shortage nationwide since 2021 and waiters are in shortage in regional areas.
In response to QSR staffing challenges, café franchise San Churro has implemented a new training approach to attract and retain younger talent.
“[Younger employees] are increasingly seeking engaging, flexible, and technology-driven work environments. Industry trends indicate a shift towards a more mobile-first, microlearning, and gamified training methods to appeal to this demographic,” said San Churro General Manager of Operations Marc Moniz.
“We have found that the younger workforce, in particular, requires tailored training methods that align with their digital literacy and preference for interactive learning experiences,” said Moniz.
The franchise implemented FranConnect’s World Manager Frontline solution, which is designed to engage and retain the new generation of younger staff. It includes gamification of training, competitions, and mobile-first training modules that cater to the preferences of 15-to 20-year-olds.
Moniz says San Churro has seen a significant increase in training completion rates and staff satisfaction among those new to the workforce – factors which often indicate a higher retention rate.
“By investing in our staff through innovative training programs, we’re ensuring the long-term success and growth of our franchise network.”
2020 research showed that gamification in the hospitality industry enhances employee engagement, and created a more enjoyable work environment.
