The Government of Western Australia has announced a two-year trial of the Banned Drinkers Register (BDR).

The program will begin in the Pilbara region from 1 December 2020 and prevent problem drinkers from purchasing alcohol as well as provide support services to ensure individuals receive assistance.

According to a press release from the WA Government, Western Australian company Scantek will supply and support the BDR trial, which will “investigate the concept’s effectiveness in limiting alcohol-related harm by ensuring banned drinkers will not be able to purchase takeaway liquor”.

Staff at liquor stores will be alerted with a visual indicator when a banned drinker attempts to purchase alcohol.

People can also request to be voluntarily placed on the register.

The Australian Hotels Association has welcomed the trial, with CEO Bradley Woods calling it a “culmination of many years of work from industry”.

“The announced trial … represents a major step in the right direction towards a targeted, effective policy that focuses attention and resources on those that most need help when it comes to problem drinking,” says Woods.

“This measure will prevent known problem drinkers from purchasing alcohol but equally important is the fact that those listed on the BDR will be directed towards support services to ensure they get the help they need.

“The AHA, licensed takeaway venues and the broader industry is committed to ensuring this trial is successful in the Pilbara so we can see it expanded to other areas where it is required.”
