Apprentice chef trio heads to France

Three Victorian apprentices are off to work with France’s chef of the year, Thierry Marx, after winning a new award held by Restaurant and Catering Victoria.

The winners of the inaugural Thierry Marx Career Development Award are Jasper Avent (Lake House Restaurant--Daylesford), Samantha Gogol (Wild Oak Restaurant & Wine Bar--Olinda), and Scott Stevenson (Pettavel Winery & Restaurant (Waurn Ponds).

The three were selected from six finalists and will head to France to work for one month at Thierry Marx’s two Michelin star restaurants at Chateau Cordeillan Bages in Bordeaux.

While initially only two were to receive the award, a high calibre of finalists and close judging scores led to a decision for three to be selected, with the unanimous agreement of the supporting partners.

Todd Blake, recently appointed new CEO of award partner Restaurant and Catering Victoria, said the experience would “change the lives of the three young chefs”.

“Programs like the Thierry Marx Award do a great deal for the restaurant and catering industry,” Blake said. “Not only are Scott, Jasper and Samantha set for a unique experience, but many other young chefs will be encouraged to remain in the trade, develop their skills, and strive for excellence as a result of their success.”

As well as R&CVictoria the award partners included Crown Limited, Meat & Livestock Australia, and VIP Personnel.
