It’s not clear yet how severely supplies of oranges might be affected by bad frosts that have hindered harvesting of new season navel oranges in two of Australia’s major growing regions.

A spokesperson for Australian Citrus Grower said that growers in the areas, the Murray Valley and the Riverland, were currently doing assessments on the damage to their fruit and the full extent of the impact would not be know for a couple of weeks.

“They are predicting a 20% drop in drop in production but we are not really sure yet,” she said. “It won’t be until their assessment that we will know if production will decrease that dramatically.”

ACG president Mark Chown said that early reports from the affected areas indicated the “worst frost event since 1982”.
