Margaret Fulton our top culinary influencer.
The much loved and admired Margaret Fulton now has another accolade to add to her long list — Australia’s most influential culinary icon.
The matriarch of Australian cooking, has been voted as the most influential celebrity chef on Aussie cooking habits in an online survey conducted by the organiser of the Good Food and Wine Show event with respondents from around Australia.
According to the results, Fulton was seen as by far the most influential on our home cooking habits.
Coming second was Curtis Stone while the MasterChef television series was voted the most influential on Australian cooking habits followed by Jamie Oliver, Donna Hay and Maggie Beer.
But when asked which chef they would most like to be the results were a little different with Jamie Oliver grabbing the most votes closely followed by the self styled domestic goddess Nigella Lawson.
When it came to our favourite dish, the Aussie barbecue is our most iconic dish with the meat pie and sauce taking second place, followed by the family roast.
And while Australians tend to stick with a staple set of dishes with the roast dinner, stir-fry and pasta coming in as the most cooked dinners in the family home, the survey also revealed that there is a longing a return of the retro classic Beef Stroganoff. Nearly a third of Aussies think that the dish should be back on the menu.
Could it be the influence of MasterChef coming into play? The dish was back in the culinary spotlight in last year’s series of the show after Brisbane contestant Sharnee Rawson was sent home for not including the vital spice paprika in her stroganoff.
One in five respondents also thought the prawn cocktail was due to make a reappearance while there was also a push for the traditional Swiss cheese fondue.
And as much as we love our home cooking, more than half of Aussies surveyed are ordering in take-away meals once a week with Thai the most likely choice.
Other findings:
• More than half of Aussies buy take-away meals at least once a week.
• When eating out, fast food (McDonalds and KFC) were voted as the least favourite options.
• Almost half of Aussies favour a Sauvignon Blanc when it comes to white wine.
• Cabernet Sauvignon is our favourite variety of red wine.
• Chocolate is the best comfort food according to 28.5 per cent of Aussies while mashed potatoes came off second with 12.1 per cent of votes.
